Chamber Anniversary Feature: Downers Grove Sportsmens’ Club
As the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce & Industry celebrates 75 years of building, connecting and engaging our business community, we are recognizing some of our longest members who have helped us to succeed.
The Downers Grove Sportsmen’s Club was founded 72 years ago on about 60 acres in unincorporated Downers Grove. With the need to expand, 45 years later in 1995 it relocated to Morris and continues to be a destination in Grundy County.
Primarily a clay-target shooting facility, the goals of DGSC are to educate its members and the community in the safe and responsible use of firearms. Promote, trap, skeet and sporting clays shooting, hunting, fishing, dog training, archery and other related activities associated with outdoor sports, wildlife management and conservation.
“DGSC has enjoyed 27 years of doing business in scenic Grundy County and look forward to more in the future,” President Ken Cechura said. “We have made new friends and welcome new members. DGSC believes in patronizing the wide variety of local businesses and encourage our members to do so. Grundy County is an ideal atmosphere for the outdoor activities we all enjoy.”
The 485-acre facility has eight fields – five combination (Trap & Skeet) and three Trap only. Additionally there also is a five Stand / FITSC Field, and a 14 Station Sporting Clay Course with two levels of play. DGSC has six fields with lights and is open for evening shooting during the spring/summer on Friday nights.
The club house has a kitchen with breakfast service. DGSC host several registered ATA (Amatuer Trapshooting Association) and ISSA (Illinois State Skeet Shooting) events, the Illinois State High School Clay Target League and a wide variety of club shoots and leagues. The club also hosts several scout groups, manufacturers associations, and organized outings. The club welcomes guests and new members.
